What is a risk assessment and method statement?
A risk assessment is a careful examination of what, in your work, could cause harm to people (for example staff, contractors or third parties). Its goal is to enable you to weigh up whether you have taken enough precautions or you need to consider taking more.
A method statement takes account of risks identified by the initial risk assessment and communicates the safe system of work to those carrying it out. It describes in a logical sequence exactly how a job is to be carried out in a safe manner, as required by the risk assessment.
Who should perform a risk assessment?
A risk assessment needs to be completed by a competent person with relevant expertise. Examples would include a health and safety officer, manager or someone with experience in the particular area being assessed. It's essential that this individual is trained and knowledgeable about identifying hazards and evaluating risks effectively.
Why is risk assessment important?
Risk assessment is important because it helps to identify potential hazards in the workplace environment. This helps companies to:
- Take appropriate steps to prevent accidents, injuries or health issues and improve confidence and trust with employees.
- Create safer work conditions, comply with legal requirements and protect employees and the business.
- Organise and prioritise risks based on severity, allowing resources to be directed toward addressing the most critical issues first.

Why should I take a RAMS training course?
Risk assessment is the methodology that underpins all decisions about health and safety.
It’s therefore vitally important that anyone with a company role that touches on health and safety has a sound understanding of how to identify hazards and manage potential risks in the workplace.
Completing a RAMS course is an essential step to help you increase your knowledge of these hazards, and build a framework to improve risk management in your organisation.
Who is our RAMS course designed for?
This training course is suitable for individuals who are responsible for writing and reviewing Risk Assessments and Method Statements, as well as anyone who is responsible for managing contractors who will be undertaking practical tasks in their workplace.
