Draft standard published on remediation techniques applied at contaminated sites
4 Jan 2021
A new draft British/International Standard, ISO CD 24212 Remediation techniques applied at contaminated sites, has been published for comment.
The document provides an overview of principles and characteristics on most commonly used remediation techniques applied on soils (as defined under ISO 11074) and its scope is restricted to the remediation of contaminated sites, i.e. where soil, soil gas and groundwater are concerned. It provides standard terminology, principles, scope and key aspects on design/dimensioning and monitoring for each remediation techniques, but also an overview of the known advantages/limitations of each technique (in particular in a sustainable point of view).
The draft standard is therefore intended to inform practitioners and stakeholders about the main characteristics of most commonly used remediation techniques. It can also help practioners to select technically feasible approaches within an options evaluation phase, based on state of the art of remediation technologies. It is not intended to prescribe which technique to use in a specific context and is not a frame that can cover all individual situations.
This document is intended to encourage more consistent practice in the application of remediation processes and the use of techniques that are less conventional and possibly more sustainable since a full description of advantages and limitations of each technique are provided.
